Advocacy
The United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro advocates for the arts in a variety of ways on both local and state levels. In partnership with the High Point Area Arts Council, an Advocacy Task Force has been formed to advocate for arts in education, and county support.
Each spring, the UAC invites donors, volunteers and members of the arts community to participate in Arts Day-- a two-day effort led by Arts NC to bring delegations from around the state to meet one-on-one with legislators and request funding for the arts through the NC Arts Council. Each year, the UAC receives vital funding from the NC Arts Council through the Grassroots and Regional Artists grants programs.

Grants
The United Arts Council’s (UAC) Grant programs are funded in part by the North Carolina Arts Council’s Grassroots Program and from foundations, corporations and individual donors. We offer four grant programs (Mission Support, Project Support, Teacher Art Grants and Regional Artists Grants) with the following General Guidelines:
UAC Mission: Investing In Greater Greensboro’s Creative Community
Our work is centered on assuring the health and growth of Greensboro’s nonprofit creative community that enhances quality of life through access to the arts, economic vitality and arts in education.
UAC Strategic Priorities:
- ACCESS –Increase community access to the arts and ensure the rich diversity, sustainability, and growth of arts resources.
- ECONOMIC VITALITY – Support economic vitality and position Greensboro as a cultural destination by recognizing innovation and excellence in creativity.
- ARTS EDUCATION – Foster life-long learning in and through the arts.
What we fund:
The United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro invests, through competitive grant programs, in high quality arts experiences which further UAC strategic priorities.
Who we fund:
The United Arts Council provides financial support to non-profit arts organizations and artists who meet UAC eligibility requirements.
Funding Goals:
- The creation and/or presentation of high-quality arts programming – including the visual arts, music, dance, theatre, and other performance, instructional and/or creative arts programs or art forms. Priority is given to the arts experience, and not on expenses associated with endowment-building, capital projects, fund raising, debt reduction, the acquisition of equipment, or training programs.
- Nonprofit arts organizations, programs and projects which leverage other support in the community, and participate in UAC’s fundraising efforts on behalf of the arts.
- Programs and projects with defined outcomes and measureable impact.
- Programs and projects that increase access to the arts, engage the community, and enrich the varied cultural vitality of Greater Greensboro.
- Arts education experiences that inspire and engage.
General Funding Policies
- Applicant must reside and deliver product in the Greater Greensboro market.
- UAC will consider only one request from each applicant per grant year.
- The UAC does not fund grant-making organizations, entities which receive a majority of their operating budget from a unit of government, or college/ university programs. Arts in Education Grants in K-12 schools are the only exception to this policy.
- Applicants must demonstrate sound management and governance practices, and fiscal responsibility.
- UAC funds cannot be used for private functions, fund-raising events, receptions, food or beverages.
- If a prior grant recipient, applicant must be current with final reports to the UAC and must have a solid track record of compliance with UAC grant requirements.
- Any grant funds not expended by the end of the grant cycle, July 1 of the year following funding, must be returned to the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro.
- UAC reserves the right to make a final decision on an organization’s or artist’s eligibility and/or funding
Greensboro Area Cultural Partners
The UAC is proud to support Greater Greensboro’s local arts industry with financial support, marketing and research services, and advocacy for the arts in our local schools and government.
Greensboro Cultural Center
Home to nonprofit arts organizations, the Greensboro Cultural Center is filled with activity year round. The four-level facility, located at 200 N. Davie Street in downtown Greensboro, hosts visual art galleries, pottery and dance studios, visual art studios, music rooms and multiple administrative offices. Open to the public seven days a week, the Greensboro Cultural Center is owned and operated by the City of Greensboro. Throughout the year, the Center hosts a variety of special events including First Friday and multi-cultural festivals. The United Arts Council is proud to call the Greensboro Cultural Center home.

Public Art
The United Arts Council, in partnership with the City of Greensboro, has developed a Public Art Action Plan for the City of Greensboro. This plan was adopted in July, 2009 and calls for the creation of a Public Art Commission and a Master Plan for the City of Greensboro. Download your copy now.

The works were commissioned by the United Arts Council in partnership with the International Civil Rights Center and Museum to commemorate and celebrate the sit-in movement which began with four NC A&T students at the Woolworth's counter in Greensboro. The UAC is here to help market and promote your arts and culture event in Greater Greensboro. Whether in print, on the web, through email or at a local event, we're here to help you attract new audiences. Here are the ways you can connect to our services:
FIRST FRIDAY
- For businesses in the downtown BID district, participate in First Fridays on the First Friday of every month - a free self-guided tour of Downtown Greensboro's shops, local art galleries, art studios, museums, and alternative art venues on the First Friday of every month from 6-9 pm. First Friday is marketed and promoted by the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro in partnership with Downtown Greensboro, Inc.
- Participation by downtown businesses includes representation in print advertisements each month as well as a listing of your establishment at DowntownFridays.com and ExploreGreensboro.com. Submit your information 3 weeks prior to First Friday to Lee Mortensen at DGI.

Once per month, ads are placed in GoTriad and Yes! Weekly publications to promote arts and culture events happening on the weekend ahead.
MONTHLY EVENT E-BLAST
Once per month, the UAC compiles a list of arts and culture events coming in the month ahead. To be included in this e-blast, upload your event to Explore Greensboro by the 15th of the previous month (e.g. For inclusion in the October e-blast, events must be posted to Explore Greensboro by September 15).TEACHER RESOURCE GUIDE
The Teacher Resource Guide is provided to Guilford County teachers as a resource for Guilford to coordinate classroom learning with local arts organizations and artist programs. This resource is a partnership with the High Point Area Arts Council, City Arts, Guilford County Schools and Guilford Education Alliance. Arts organizations may advertise in the guide for a minimal fee - which is used to cover the cost of printing and distribution. For more information, contact Altina Layman.
Research
The UAC, in conjunction with NC Arts Council and Americans for the Arts has conducted economic research to measure the impact of the arts industry in Guilford County. The lastest study information was released in 2007/2008. We are currently gathering data for the 2011 year. To view the 2007/2008 study, click here.

Sternberger Artists Center
The United Arts Council currently owns and operates the Sternberger Artists Center at 712 Summit Avenue in Greensboro. Built in 1926 by Sigmund Sternberger, the Center was donated in 1971 from the Sigmund Sternberger Foundation. Originally, the home housed the offices and member agencies of the United Arts Council. Today, the Sternberger Artists Center thrives with 90-100% occupancy with a variety of artists including writers, painters, photographers and more.
